Indigenous Communities
For lovers of culture and exciting new experiences, there are various options to get up-close and personal with some of Colombia’s indigenous people. Colombia has 87 different ethnic tribes, spread throughout the country. In fact, some of the last living tribes on earth, that have little to no contact with the modern world, are being discovered in the Colombian Amazon. Our unique tours will take you by boat to indigenous communities in the Amazon, the Pacific, and the Atlantic. In Nuqui, take a boat through the mangroves and the rainforest where you will come into contact with the Boca de Jagua community, situated at the river’s edge. In Silvia, visit the famous market, where the Guambi indians come from neighboring communities each week to sell their homemade products. In Palenque you will find Colombia’s first free African-American Colony, having preserved many of their customs. And in the Amazon, you can experience new cultures, languages, and traditions.

Take a class with a pro and then dance the night away in one of the cities numerous clubs. If you’re better with your hands than with your feet, you can hat-making in Aguadas, where you’ll learn how to weave your own hat from palm fronds, and bring home your own iconic wearable piece. Basket making is another native tradition that continues into this day, and in Filandia you can make a basket out of “bejuco”, a thin, flexible vine. Another popular Colombian art form is red clay pottery, and nowhere does it better than Raquira, where you can make your own useable dish to put on display and to use in your kitchen.
